Hiking in Red Lipstick | South River Falls

Now that the year is coming to an end, I’m making a point to reflect on some of the best moments of 2016. It’s been an interesting year to say the least, and I’ve been reviewing some things that never made it to the blog, but definitely deserve a post!
Back in September I made the trek down to central VA to go hiking with a few friends at South River Falls in Standardsville, Virginia. I’d never heard of the hike until about a week before we ventured out, but after research I learned that SRF is the second biggest waterfall in the Shenandoah Valley. I’ve always loved hiking, and hope to get even more into it when the weather gets warm again, but this hike was a bit of a wake up call for my amateur group.
The journey to the falls was deceptively easy, mostly downhill with a little bit of a climb on the way to the base of the waterfall itself. The waterfall was absolutely stunning, definitely check out the instagram video of it, even though it does nothing near justice! The journey back, however was about three miles uphill, at a total incline of 850 feet. It was a bit of a bear, but we made it all in one piece. We should’ve packed more water and snacks, but we ultimately survived!
I would absolutely recommend visiting South River Falls and will likely be back to visit the trail myself many more times.
